Supporting inspection preparation, self-evaluation and post-Ofsted action planning
How confident are you that your subject provision would stand up to scrutiny under Ofsted's current inspection framework?
This brand-new series of Subject Leader Curriculum Audits has been developed by the Focus Education team to help primary schools evaluate their current practice against the requirements and expectations of the new Ofsted framework.
Drawing on the experience of Focus Education consultants, current practice in schools and inspection activity since the introduction of the new framework in 2025, these practical audits provide support and challenge for subject leaders and senior leaders.
Whether your next inspection is on the horizon or you've recently been inspected and are reviewing your next steps, the audits provide a structured way to evaluate provision, identify strengths and pinpoint areas for development.
A practical way to test your subject provision
Each audit takes subject leaders through a series of questions linked to the key areas considered within the current Ofsted framework.
The audits cover:
- Curriculum and teaching
- Inclusion
- Achievement
- Leadership and governance
- Behaviour
- Personal development
- Early years
They encourage subject leaders to consider the effectiveness of their current provision, documentation and practice, helping them determine whether they are working towards the expected or strong standard.
Rather than leaving subject leaders to work out how the framework applies to their particular subject, the audits provide a clear and manageable structure for reviewing provision.
From evaluation to action
The audits are designed to do more than simply identify where you are.
They provide a useful starting point for creating a focused action plan, using the Ofsted framework as a reference point against which current practice can be reviewed.
They can help you to:
- Evaluate the strengths and areas for development within your subject
- Review whether your documentation and evidence are appropriate
- Consider how well your current provision aligns with the Ofsted framework
- Identify whether your subject is working towards the expected or strong standard
- Challenge and support subject leaders in their evaluation
- Identify priorities for improvement
- Inform your school's wider self-evaluation
- Contribute to pre-inspection preparation
- Support the development or review of a post-Ofsted action plan
The audits help to unscramble what can otherwise feel like a daunting task: understanding what the new Ofsted framework means for each individual subject and identifying what needs to happen next.
