Most educators will agree that reading is one of, if not the most important thing to learn for children to develop their knowledge and understanding across all areas of the curriculum. A big part of that is developing a solid understanding of vocabulary.
Across the wider curriculum, we need to ensure that children develop an understanding of both substantive (topic specific) and disciplinary (subject specific) vocabulary. It is our job to expose them to this vocabulary progressively and present opportunities for them to develop an understanding of it and use it successfully in context.
During the session, we will consider:
-
The different tiers of vocabulary development
-
The importance of starting vocabulary development in EYFS
-
The difference between substantive (topic specific) and disciplinary (subject specific) vocabulary
-
Developing vocabulary progression within the wider curriculum
-
Innovative ways to approach vocabulary teaching
