The plans outlined in this section take full account of the expectations set out in the 'Development Matters' document and focus on the Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design sections.

They link directly to the other units in the Learning Challenge Curriculum in as much as we identify the ‘composite’ and ‘components’ in the first instance and then provide ideas for how best to develop these with young children. The aim is to help schools achieve consistency and sequence. These early years units link to Year 1 Learning Challenge activities, so help you to ensure that your curriculum starts at Nursery and runs through to Years 2 or 6.

Each Early Years unit includes suggested continuous play activities and makes links with a range of texts supporting each aspect of work. There is also an assessment section outlining the things to look out for.

The plans propose a specific way of working but suggest coverage supporting children's development. Although not devised as half-termly units, they could be delivered that way. The focus is on allowing children to lead the learning, but the plans can be used to create prompts to support children unsure how to proceed.

Some units are marked with an N, intended for 3- and 4-year-olds, but can be used with Reception-aged children at the beginning of the school year or with less mature Reception-aged children at any time.

The aim is to provide ideas for delivering a stimulating and effective early years curriculum with the learning sequence drawn from 'Development Matters'.

For the 'Understanding the World' section, there is a focus on:
•    History
•    Geography and community, and
•    Science

For the ‘Expressive Arts and Design’ section, there is a focus on:
•    Art
•    DT, and
•    Music and Dance

All units start with the statement from 'Development Matters' and a four-point proposed sequence for a learning journey encompassing focused learning and continuous provision. The suggested texts help to create strong links with communication, language, and literacy.
