The framework for inspection recognises the importance of school leaders ‘leading the learning’ and by definition ‘leading the curriculum’. This does not necessarily mean that headteachers have to be writing the curriculum but it is important they know its contents and also why the decisions taken were made.
The process of managing curricular change requires careful planning and an acceptance that it will take time to embed. The most successful schools often pilot elements of change with a few people in order to iron out potential problems and develop a small team of ambassadors who can work with colleagues. It is important that great schools are always evaluating and revising their curriculum.
