This half-day course is the ideal preparation for new subject leaders in Primary schools. As colleagues move into the subject leadership role, they typically have no experience of how to carry out effective monitoring, having only had it ‘done to them’ as class teachers.
This course ensures they are well prepared to take on these activities in a meaningful and purposeful way. The course covers how to carry out effective learning walks, book scrutiny and pupil voice ensuring these are linked to the relevant curriculum plans and intent in a school. How this can be managed, given the time constraints of teaching alongside the subject leadership role is also covered in the course with examples from different schools included in the material. This course can be a useful part of induction into the role of subject leader for colleagues taking the leadership of a core or a foundation subject for the first time.
The session will address the following:
-
How do we plan an effective learning walk, book scrutiny or pupil voice session?
-
What should be the focus of our monitoring as a subject leader?
-
How can we record and summarise our findings?
-
How can we make best use of limited time to ensure our monitoring has a positive impact?
-
How does monitoring fit into a cycle of improvement in our subject?
